Lighting Depth

The lighting depth focuses on a redesign of five major areas within the Bullis School Discovery Center. Each design solution addresses multiple quantitative and qualitative criteria and considerations. The five spaces are 

Large Work Space- Lab

Special Purpose Space- Innovation Lab

Circulation Space- Lobby

Outdoor Space- Rooftop Terrace

Additional Space- Exterior Plaza

Electrical Depth

From the current specification of the electrical system, the building is utilizing a secondary service, which the utility transformer is provided by the utility provider. However, there is multiple buildings on the Bullis campus which could be benefited from switching into primary service, which the utility transformer is owned by the Bullis itself. Although the up-front cost could be significant higher, the energy cost will be decreased from lower utility rate and combined peak demand load. For my spring semester, I am proposing to perform a study in comparing primary service and second service by redesigning the campus electrical distribution system. At the same time, I will perform comprehensive analysis on feasibility in terms of initial cost, operating cost savings and payback time.

Daylighting Depth 

An integrated daylighting study will be performed within the west-facing laboratory. With the materials from AE 565- Daylighting, this will be utilized to satisfy the requirements of the Master of the Architectural Engineering. Parametric design would be used in this study to explore different shading options in order to find the optimal design for the space.

Mechanical Breath

Within daylighting, I will also look at the mechanical impact from the possible solutions generated from the parametric models. The potential difference of energy demand from solar heat gain would be part of the consideration of the selection of the final solution. The ideal scenarios would be more ideal daylight while lowering

Construction Breath

Aside from energy consumption, cost is also an important factor since this project is privately funded and there is very likely to have an additional cost from purchasing and installing the new daylighting system. In this breath, I will be analysis the initial cost, operating cost savings and also pay-back time in order to be part of the considerations for the selection of the final solution.solar heat gain.
